IDAA on z/OS

Running your IDAA in a Docker Container

It's now possible to run your IDAA (IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator) in a Docker Container. Which was previously only available as a physical hardware appliance. With the hardware appliance going out of support in 2025/2026, actions are required by IDAA customers.

IDAA on z/OS in SSC

With version 7.5.12 of the IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator (IDAA) it's now possible to run in a Docker container on the same hardware as your z/OS. With the hardware IDAA platform going out of support, it is a viable option for mainframe customers. There are also several advantages to doing that.

Background

For you who didnt know. Compute power (MSU) on the mainframe doesnt come cheap. And if you have a heavy database subsystem, such as DB2, and you run a boatload of queries on it, it gets even more expensive. So a long time ago (in the 2000s) a company called Neteeza, came up with a really cool idea. Creating a copy of the DB2 database, and sending some of the highly complex and expensive DB2 queries to a hardware accelerated appliance (running PostgreSQL under the hood) - reducing the burden on DB2. Neteeza got aquired by IBM in 2010.

After several product iterations. The hardware appliance for IDAA will now go out of support (2025/2026) forcing IDAA customers to do something about it.

Containers

So since 2023, you can now download a Docker container containing all the IDAA software from IBM. Create a Secure Sevice Container (SSC) directly on your z/OS hardware platform and run your IDAA container in there. Sounds easy. Well it acctually is.

The setup looks relatively straight forward in the service element. The advantages are that you dont have any more hardware in your basement. And containers are very easy to manage. One really big plus is, that the container is running on IFL processors (Integrated Facility for Linux) - which are usually free to use (mostly). Having the container on the same hardware as your DB2, will also speed up your network latency issues. As it can use the hipersockets facility reducing latency drastically.

Alternatively if you're looking to get rid of your IDAA - you can look into the IBM CloudPak DataGate Solution. Its flexible and in the cloud, but does have its limitations. However is the closest you can get to the IDAA solution.
